Apples Galore

Last week we learned all about apples in honor of Johnny Appleseed's birthday. Did you know that Johnny Appleseed's real name was John Chapman??? We learned all kinds of neat and interesting facts about Johnny! We also read several information texts about apples. One of the books talked about the numerous different types of apples, so we decided to have an apple taste test to see which ones we liked the best. Oddly enough, I couldn't find any yellow apples last week, so we sampled some sweet Red Delicious apples and some sour Granny Smith apples. After our taste test, we created a pictograph, tally chart, and bar graph to represent our favorite kind of apple. It was a very close race!

Our First SWEETIES Of The Year!

Last week I introduced the "Sweet Readers" Program to the kids and they were super, duper excited to get started on those Smartie words! I love it when they get excited about learning:) Can you believe that there were 2 smartie students that were able to master all 15 sight words in the first set!!! There were several others that were so close, I just know that they will get it this week;) Congratulations to Ben and Trey for being our first set of SWEET Readers.

We LOVE Our Grandparents!

On Friday, September 6th, we celebrated Grandparent's Day by inviting our grandparents to lunch. We had a great turnout! The kids absolutely loved having someone special to eat lunch with:)

Vowel Video

Another school year has begun and I have another great bunch of kids! They have been working so hard the last two weeks on learning rules and procedures and they are really starting to get the hang of first grade:)
Last week we reviewed vowels and consonants. To help us remember the names of the vowels, we learned a little tune. Check out our video...I am pretty sure they have mastered the vowels of the alphabet!

First Grade on the MOVE!

Our last full week of school was loads of FUN!!!! We had our talent show on Monday, skating on Tuesday, swimming on Wednesday, and had End-of-the-Year Awards on Friday. Talk about B-U-S-Y:) On Friday morning I had a special surprise for the kiddos...a buckot-o-goodies! I filled each pail with summer books, reading pointers, playdough, candy, pencils, crayons, a silly straw, stickers, and did I mention candy! Just a littel treat for my sweet, sweet firsties:) They make my heart smile, I'm going to miss them so much next year! Here are some pictures of the students looking at all of their new goodies...it was almost like Christmas morning:)
