Saturday, October 26th was our annual Fall Festival King and Queen program. This year Laurie and Trey were selected to represent our class and they did a fabulous job. The students did a great job filling our money jar up! It was so funny watching the kid's reactions each day as they would check the progress of our jar:) Thanks to all the parents, grandparents, and family members that contributed. This is a great fundraiser for our first grade class. All the money that we collected will be used for first grade field trips and activities throughout the year. Now, back to our lovely queen and handsome king...Laurie and Trey! Aren't they snazzy!!!
I love it when I get the opportunity to see my kids in action outside of the classroom. Last Saturday I got to see one of my cuties play an exciting soccer game.
I can hardly keep up with all these SWEET readers! Geesh, there are more and more each week! But that is definitely a good problem to have:) So, here they are in the spotlight...
All the students have been working so hard each day, especially on those SWEET sight words! Unfortunately, my camera is out of commission at the moment so I have had to resort to using the ipad to take pictures of our SWEET Reader Awards.
Last week we had a wonderful guest speaker that brought a "hive" of friends along! Mr. Danny Brewer set up a glass display of honey bees. We learned that honey bees are pollinators and play a very essential role in our ecosystem. He showed us some of the tools that he uses to take care of his bees and their hives. After that, the kids got to take a close look at the honeybees in the glass display. They were beyond amazed...and I was right there with them:) Check out some of the pictures from our "bee lesson."
Last week we learned all about apples in honor of Johnny Appleseed's birthday. Did you know that Johnny Appleseed's real name was John Chapman??? We learned all kinds of neat and interesting facts about Johnny! We also read several information texts about apples. One of the books talked about the numerous different types of apples, so we decided to have an apple taste test to see which ones we liked the best. Oddly enough, I couldn't find any yellow apples last week, so we sampled some sweet Red Delicious apples and some sour Granny Smith apples. After our taste test, we created a pictograph, tally chart, and bar graph to represent our favorite kind of apple. It was a very close race!
